Knowing there are many essential oils to help with emotional stability is a comfort. However, sometimes just knowing the list, doesn't really put it into practice. Pairing these amazing oils with a simple activity can increase their ability to help us. Mindfulness can help us reduce stress and achieve greater focus. What happens when we combine the oils with practicing mindfulness?
What is mindfulness? Mindfulness isn't about stopping or changing your negative thoughts. True mindfulness comes from leaving your thoughts alone and focusing on something outside of yourself. This break from your thoughts is a great way to stop the spiraling of the negativity or anxiety.
Here are 4 mindfulness exercises, paired with an essential oil:
Suggested oils--Joyful Blend, Wild Orange, Invigorating or Grapefruit
Place a drop or two of one of the oils above in the palm of your hands. Place your hands close to your face and for a full minute take deep, purposeful breaths. As you breathe, focus on the act of breathing. Notice the breaths going in and out. Acknowledge the scent of the oil and imagine it traveling in with each breath and any negativity traveling out.
Suggested oils--Bergamot, Frankincense, Lavender
Place a drop or two of your oil of choice on your temples and at the base of your neck. Sit for a few minutes and practice Mindful Listening. This is about listening to every sound in your immediate space. Is the heater on? Are there noises drifting in from outside? Can you hear your heart beating? Focus on every sound around you while you take slow, deep breaths.
Suggested oils--Black Pepper, Basil, Peppermint, Patchouli
Mix your oil of choice with a carrier oil and rub on to your feet. Afterwards, take a few deep breaths from the oils still on your hands while practicing Mindful Observation. To do this, choose an item in your close proximity such as a piece of furniture, a plant or if you are outdoors, a mountain or cloud. Focus on this item and let yourself notice every single thing about it. See it as if you are noticing it for the first time. Notice the texture, the colors, the shape, etc. Doing this, combined with the oils will give you a short break and a renewed sense of purpose to continue through your day.
Suggested oils--Rosemary, Grapefruit, Wild Orange
Place a drop of oil on one or more of your pressure points (temples, behind the ear, inside of elbows, etc.) Think of 5 things in your day that usually are forgotten or overlooked. This can be the way your clothes feel on your body, the way your lungs fill with air, the way the sun brings warmth to your day, etc. After focusing on these five items for a few minutes, take a deep breath and face your challenge with confidence knowing you can do it!
