Tips for Maintaining Digestive Health

digestive health

The digestive system is comprised of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract and is a series of connected organs along a thirty-foot pathway responsible for chewing food, digesting and absorbing nutrients, and expelling waste.

There are over one hundred million neurons embedded in the gut, which is more than exist in the spinal column or peripheral nervous system. This mesh-like network of neurons, known as the enteric nervous system (sometimes called the second brain) works together with the central nervous system to oversee every aspect of digestion.

Understanding how the digestive tract works in our bodies, helps us know how to best help and support it. Good nutrition, exercise, reducing stress load are just a few of the natural ways we can support our digestive health. It is also important to drink plenty of water and get a good night's sleep.
There are also essential oils that can help with this support. Here is a blend of oils in doTERRA's Digestzen and a little more on what it can do:
  • Internal: Place 1-5 drops in water and drink, take capsule, lick off back of hand, or place drop(s) on or under tongue to allow impact directly in stomach and intestines.
  • Topical: Apply oils topically on abdomen and/or bottoms of feet for relief.
Consider using a warm bath or a warm compress to help ease feelings of queasiness, gas and/or bloating: For bath: Add 10-15 drops of Digestzen to bath salts (i.e. Epsom); stir oils into salts; place salts in hot (as is tolerable) bathwater and soak for 20 minutes. For compress: Apply Digestzen with carrier oil to abdomen. Place warm, moist cloth over top to create soothing compress. Repeat as needed.
