Maintaining good oral health is just one aspect of living a life of wellness. The mouth is colonized by hundreds of different bacterial species that inhabit dental plaque. These species adhere in layers to oral surfaces. These need to be cleaned on a regular basis.
Essential oils are a particularly effective means of supporting oral health. Clove oil helps to manage oral discomfort. Cinnamon, melaleuca and peppermint are also great at supporting oral health.
Two ways to apply essential oils for oral health support are:
1. Topical. Apply oils directly to an area in the mouth, such as gums, teeth, etc. Use a carrier oil, such as coconut oil for any oils that might be a little sensitive and apply as frequently as needed.
2. Internal. Place oils on a toothbrush and brush teeth with a selected oil. You can ingest oils such as lemon, as well.
Making your own mouthwash is a great way to support your mouth's oral health. Use the recipe or a variation of it to have on hand and use daily:
Add the following oils to a small glass bottle:
- 5 drops melaleuca
- 4 drops peppermint
- 3 drops cinnamon
- 2 drops clove
- 2 drops myrrh
Fill the rest of the way with purified water. Shake before each use.
